[ARCHIVED] Statement from Beaumont Mayor John Stewart March 20, 2020

Beaumont, AB – Beaumont Mayor John Stewart had the following statement regarding the COVID-19 pandemic:

“It’s been a long, busy and trying week. As we all adjust to new realities, there are many people to thank from the past week. I’ve seen amazing and devoted people across our community rise to the occasion.

“I’d like to thank our city staff who have been working long hours to keep services going for residents. With city office closed, I’ve been working from home myself, and although it’s been a change, it’s a necessary one. Our employees are adjusting to their new situation. Whether working from home, out in the community, or at our emergency coordination centre, they are doing us proud.

“I’d also like to thank local businesses and their employees for keeping essential services open, like pet stores, grocery stores and gas stations, so that residents have the supplies they and their families need. And I’d like to applaud the businesses that have adapted and found different ways to serve our community.

“Lastly, I’d once again like to thank all of you who have volunteered and stepped up to help one another. We’re all going through this unique and trying experience while dealing with our own emotions and personal challenges. Yet you all continue to inspire me with your selflessness and a strong sense of community.

“As we begin to settle into this new normal, we cannot get too comfortable and forget about our roles to help flatten the curve. We must all continue to wash our hands, practice social distancing, and self-isolate following the recommendations of the Alberta government.

“We are fortunate that the spread in the Edmonton zone has been relatively low so far, but we must all continue to come together - not physically of course - to help prevent the spread.

“In an increased effort to do just that, we have made the decision to close all of our playground structures effective immediately.

“Additionally, your council and I will be looking into ways to ease the financial burden for our residents and businesses – I expect I’ll be able to provide you with more information next week.

“Looking ahead, I’ll continue to provide these updates, though they will be less frequent. Please continue following our social media channels and checking our website regularly. We’ll post updates any time there is something new we can share with you. Please continue to follow the Government of Alberta’s recommendations – their website is linked on ours.

“Stay safe out there, and please do your part to help contain this virus.”
