[ARCHIVED] Beaumont begins re-opening outdoor recreation activities

Beginning May 22, residents can use Beaumont playgrounds, tennis courts, the skate park and other outdoor recreation sites with some restrictions as the city proceeds with a gradual re-opening of facilities that were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“People in Beaumont continue doing a great job following the province’s health orders and have done their part to flatten the curve in Alberta,” says Mayor John Stewart. “We’re going to move ahead carefully, but it’s time to start letting people get out into their communities in a healthy and safe way.”

Parks and trails have remained open, but most outdoor facilities and activities closed in March to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. With cases in Alberta declining and the provincial government providing guidance for municipalities under its relaunch strategy, the city is now able to begin opening outdoor facilities and locations, including tennis courts, playgrounds, the disc golf course and the skate park.

Physical distancing requirements will remain in place and the city encourages other measures to ensure the safety of participants and the public, such as handwashing and disinfecting shared sports equipment prior to use.

A full list of recreational activities now open to the public, along with health requirements and recommended measures, is available on the City of Beaumont’s website. Further guidance for outdoor activities for the public is also available on the Government of Alberta’s website.

Indoor facilities, including the Ken Nichol Regional Recreation Centre and the Centre Communautaire Beaumont Community Centre remain closed pending further direction from the Alberta government. The city will consider a number of factors, including resident and employee safety, public health orders and provincial guidance in determining when other facilities can open.
