City updatesEnvironmental initiativesWaste collection Posted on: September 9, 2026 Beaumont’s recycling program is expanding as part of a province-wide change to streamline how recycling works in every community in Alberta. Residents will soon be able to recycle more materials in their blue bag, with less guesswork about what goes where. Recycling program changes Starting October 1, these items can go into blue bags for curbside recycling: Glass containers Foam packaging, including: clean meat trays and takeout containers Flexible plastics, like: bread bags, chip bags and bubble wrap Paper laminates, like disposable coffee cups Empty aerosol containers What this means for residents Less sorting and fewer questions about what’s recyclable. More materials diverted from the landfill. The same materials are accepted in every Alberta municipality. No additional trips to the Leduc and District Waste Management Facility for materials like glass and Styrofoam. There’s no added cost to residents for the expanded program. GFL Environmental will keep collecting blue bags as part of regular curbside waste collection using the same schedule as before. Reasons for the change Alberta is moving to single-stream recycling as part of the province’s next Extended Producer Responsibility program, which was introduced in 2022. Circular Materials, a not-for-profit organization, now manages the province’s recycling system. Under single-stream recycling, paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and metal all go into one bin or bag and get sorted at processing facilities built for this sorting process. Updated sorting information For now, residents should continue to recycle as usual until changes take effect. The City of Beaumont will update the online sorting tool and Smart, Savvy, Green app on October 1 to reflect these changes.
