A temporary closure is in effect for the Gobeil Park tennis courts as part of scheduled resurfacing work.

Project location: 5007 55 Avenue (Gobeil Park Tennis Courts)
Construction start date: June 15, 2026
Expected completion: July 18, 2026 (weather permitting)

This project is part of the City’s 2026 capital budget and will improve the condition of the existing courts by repairing surface wear and applying a new, more durable playing surface. The updated courts will also include refreshed line markings to support both tennis and pickleball play.

What you need to know

  • Construction timeline: June 15 through July 18, 2026.
  • The Gobeil Park tennis courts will be fully closed during construction and not accessible for safety reasons.
  • Residents looking for court access during construction can explore:
    • Outdoor tennis and pickleball opportunities in neighbouring communities, including Leduc and South Edmonton.
    • Drop-in pickleball programming available at the Beaumont Sport and Recreation Centre.
  • Updates will be posted as part of the weekly construction notice and on social media channels if timelines change due to weather or construction conditions.

Background

Outdoor courts naturally deteriorate over time due to weather and use. This investment helps extend the life of existing recreation infrastructure and supports active living by improving court quality for both tennis and pickleball users. This resurfacing project maintains the courts to continue being safe, durable and enjoyable for residents.

Resurfacing requires sustained warm temperatures and dry weather conditions for the surface materials to cure properly. Construction is scheduled to start on June 15 to align with contractor availability and the weather conditions required.

Completing the work during the summer construction season helps produce a high-quality finished surface and maximizes the lifespan of the courts.

Public engagement and feedback

Before finalizing the resurfacing approach, the City completed a public engagement process focused on court line visibility, clarity and overall usability. 99 residents participated in the survey. Feedback was generally supportive and residents highlighted line clarity and contrast as key considerations. This input informed the final approach. Read the What We Heard post >>
