Thank you to everyone who participated in the Gobeil Park (5007 55 Ave) Tennis & Pickleball Court Resurfacing survey. The engagement was conducted to gather feedback on the proposed court line configuration and colour contrast before resurfacing work begins this summer.

A total of 99 responses were received.

What we heard

Overall, feedback indicated that most respondents felt the proposed court layout would be usable and that most participants could distinguish the proposed court lines.

Written feedback highlighted three key themes:

  • The ability to distinguish between overlapping tennis and pickleball court lines.
  • Concerns about colour contrast and the visibility of certain court markings.
  • Support from respondents for dedicated pickleball courts.

The feedback also reflected the diverse perspectives of court users, with responses received from tennis players, pickleball players, multi-sport users and parents or guardians of players.

What this means

The feedback confirmed that most respondents were generally comfortable with the proposed court layout, with visibility and line clarity as important considerations. Based on these findings, the project will proceed as planned.

Common questions

Why is this project focused on resurfacing?

The existing surface is aging and affecting the ability of residents to use the courts. Resurfacing the courts will extend their life while improving playability, enhancing safety and continuing to support both tennis and pickleball users.

Why aren’t the courts being converted into dedicated pickleball courts?

Many residents continue to use the courts for tennis. The resurfacing project allows a place to play tennis, while also providing flexibility for pickle ball users.

Why doesn’t the City build a facility specifically for pickleball?

During the engagement process, some residents expressed interest in dedicated pickleball facilities.

In 2025, the City selected a potential site and completed preliminary design work for a future pickleball facility, however, construction was not approved in the 2026 budget process. Feedback regarding a dedicated pickleball facility has been noted and the project remains on the City’s capital plan for consideration in future budget discussions.

What’s next

Resurfacing work at the Gobeil Park courts is scheduled to begin June 15, 2026 and is expected to be completed by July 18, 2026, weather permitting.

Temporary court closures will be required during construction. Project updates will be shared through the weekly construction notice on the Public Notices page and through social media.
