[ARCHIVED] Reducing barriers to affordable housing

Beaumont, AB - The City is developing a new online mapping tool and framework that will help developers, non-profit housing providers, and municipalities plan and develop affordable housing in Beaumont and surrounding regions.

As one of the finalists in the second round of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Housing Supply Challenge, the City will receive up to $424,000 to support the development of the new tool and framework.

“Beaumont’s Affordable Housing Strategy includes actions to clearly communicate the possibilities and expectations for housing development in the city. The new framework and mapping tool will help ensure affordable housing projects are compatible with our community’s existing character, while ensuring the public has clear information regarding new development projects in the future.”

Kendra Raymond, Director of Planning and Development

Fourteen proposals from across Canada were selected from a pool of 167 submissions. Recipients will share $38 million in funding to develop solutions that reduce pre-construction barriers of affordable housing in their respective regions.

Work has begun on the mapping tool that will allow City staff, non-profit housing providers, and land developers to evaluate potential sites to build affordable, multi-unit housing with considerations such as access to schools, community facilities and services, land use, transit, and other amenities that will benefit future residents.

The City is also drafting a framework that will set out a clear, transparent process for considering data from the mapping tool and approving applications for affordable or multi-unit developments.

The project is anticipated to be completed by mid-2024.
