“In light of some comments regarding a recent residential break and entry in Beaumont, I would like to clear up misconceptions about RCMP service and availability within the city. Despite some suggestions to the contrary, Beaumont has 24-7 coverage by the RCMP.
“Any crime is of concern, and a serious incident like the one that occurred during the holidays is disconcerting in a quiet, close-knit community like Beaumont. It should be noted, however, that RCMP arrived at the home within seven minutes of being called.
“The city is supported around the clock by a roster of on-duty and on-call members in Beaumont, with additional support available from the Leduc detachment. Even when the Beaumont detachment office is closed at night, RCMP members are available and will respond when called.
“No community will ever be entirely crime-free, but Beaumont is still safe overall and our five-year average crime severity index rating – a measure of crimes and their seriousness in proportion to the population – is the lowest among cities in Alberta.
“Beaumont is growing at a rapid pace and we will need to add resources for policing, along with the many other services delivered by the city, in the coming years. Council will make those decisions in the context of data and evidence.”
