Beaumont to become Canada’s Newest City on January 1

Beaumont, AB – Earlier today, the Honourable Minister of Municipal Affairs, Shaye Anderson announced that Beaumont will become Canada’s newest city as of January 1, 2019.

“Today's historic announcement is a momentous milestone for our community,” said Mayor John Stewart. “It provides us with opportunities to attract new residents, businesses, and investment to diversify our tax base and gain more recognition provincially for our community.”

“I’m proud to be a part of Beaumont's vibrant community and to witness its evolution into a thriving city. Beaumont’s community spirit, its resources, and rich heritage have so much to offer to the Edmonton Metropolitan Region and Alberta,” said the Honourable Shaye Anderson, MLA for Leduc-Beaumont. Once the title is official, Beaumont will be the 15th largest city in the province.

Already the 5th fastest growing city in Canada with annualized five-year growth rate at 4.1% (according to 2018 MoneySense Report: Top 100 Fastest-Growing Cities), Beaumont’s rapid growth from a quaint suburb to its ongoing evolution as a thriving city is a testament to the popularity of its flourishing arts and culture, safe and friendly neighbourhoods, premier location, unique Francophone identity, and the steadfast entrepreneurial spirit within the community.

Beaumont officials believe that becoming Alberta’s 19th city is a natural step forward for the community and will ensure Beaumont can retain its unique character while attracting new businesses and supporting the growth in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region.

With no business tax, excellent transportation access, and a market excited for more shopping and services, Beaumont is eager to welcome new businesses to share in the community’s success.

“Beaumont is grateful for the provincial government’s support to move ahead with this status change,” said Chief Administrative Officer, Mike Schwirtz, “city status is impressing prospective investors and is making them more aware of our great community and we look forward to advancing that further in 2019.”

The celebration for the achievement of city status will be held in May 2019. More details about the celebration will be posted at Beaumont.ab.ca/events in the New Year.
