CouncilIndigenousMayor statement Posted on: September 30, 2025 Statement from Mayor Bill Daneluik: September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to honour the survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home and acknowledge the enduring impact on families and communities. This day invites all of us to reflect deeply on the truths of our shared history and commit to meaningful action in the spirit of reconciliation. At the City of Beaumont, we encourage all residents to engage in learning opportunities, reflection and dialogue that foster understanding and connection. By honouring the past, learning in the present and taking action together, we can help build a more inclusive and compassionate community. Proclamation Proclamations have been signed by Mayor Bill Daneluik, containing messages of importance, interest or benefit to citizens of Beaumont. WHEREAS, in the words of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Canada’s residential school system for Indigenous children was an education system in name only and was created with the purpose of separating Indigenous children from their communities to weaken family ties and links to their culture; AND WHEREAS, these institutions existed in Canada for more than 100 years and well into the 1990s, inflicting trauma on thousands of Indigenous families across multiple generations; AND WHEREAS, the Truth and Reconciliation’s final report details 94 calls to action intended to reconcile our country’s past by acknowledging the harmful legacy of residential schools, honouring the culture and history of First Nations, Métis and Inuit survivors, and building a new vision based on mutual respect; AND WHEREAS, the Canadian government enacted action number 80 by declaring September 30 of each year as a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation; AND WHEREAS, Beaumont aims to celebrate the contributions and aspirations of people from all backgrounds and walks of life, and develop a greater understanding and appreciation for the community’s rich, unique and diverse culture; AND WHEREAS, Beaumont also seeks to foster an inclusive, safe and welcoming community for Indigenous Peoples; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Mayor Bill Daneluik, do hereby proclaim September 30, 2025 as: NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
