Council Posted on: March 21, 2026 Proclamations have been signed by Mayor Lisa Vanderkwaak, containing messages of importance, interest or benefit to citizens of Beaumont. WHEREAS, in December 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations designated March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day; AND WHEREAS, approximately 1 in every 750 babies born in Canada today has Down Syndrome, and an estimated 45,000 Canadians are living with Down Syndrome; AND WHEREAS, research and early intervention have dramatically improved the life span and potential of those who are affected by Down Syndrome, but more investigation is needed into the causes and treatment of Down Syndrome; AND WHEREAS, possessing a wide range of abilities, people with Down Syndrome are active participants in educational, occupational, social and recreational activities in Alberta’s communities; AND WHEREAS, people with Down Syndrome have tremendous potential to live full and fulfilling lives as contributing members of the community; AND WHEREAS, the City of Beaumont values people with Down Syndrome and their families, and supports the wellbeing of all individuals with Down Syndrome and their ability to function as fully accepted members of society; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Mayor Lisa Vanderkwaak, do hereby proclaim March 21, 2026 as: World Down Syndrome Day
