On September 30 we observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a solemn and significant day dedicated to honouring the Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools and those who never returned home, as well as the survivors, their families and communities.

Survivors have shared heartbreaking accounts of physical, sexual, psychological abuse and the intergenerational impacts continue to affect communities today.

The orange shirt symbol represents the injustice done to Indigenous children – stripping them of their identity, culture and freedom. The mantra “Every Child Matters” reminds us that each child lost must be remembered.

This day invites all of us to reflect deeply on the truths of our shared history and commit to meaningful action in the spirit of reconciliation.

The City of Beaumont encourages all residents to engage in learning opportunities, reflection and dialogue that fosters understanding and connection.

What local events can I participate in?

September 28: Art Gallery of Alberta

Indigenous Arts Market – 11 am to 4:30 pm. A completely FREE event, the INDIGENOUS ARTS MARKET is taking place in the Main Hall of the AGA, and like ShopAGA, no ticket is required to browse and explore all the amazing products and works on display.

Alberta Culture Days | Indigenous Gardening Tours – 2 to 4 pm. Join Alaynee Goodwill-Littlechild, AGA’s TD Curator for Indigenous Creativity, and Justine Jenkins, as they guide you through The Reciprocity Garden | ᐋᐧᐦᑰᐦᑐᐃᐧᐣ (wâhkôhtowin). They’ll tell you about the plants and pollinators that have made this terrace their home, while also sharing information on some traditional Indigenous gardening techniques. These short 30-minute tours will help you understand the idea of reciprocity embedded in this new outdoor exhibition.
