Mayor Responds to Electoral Boundaries Commission Final Report

Update on our Electoral Boundaries: Beaumont stays together!

Mayor statement

Beaumont City Council Mayor Lisa Vanderkwaak had the following statement in response to the final report of the Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission:

“The Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission’s final report to the Alberta Legislature isn’t the exact outcome we hoped for, but it is still a win for our community.

If the Legislature adopts the recommended changes, Beaumont would be in a new district with part of Edmonton, rather than being divided along 50 Street with Leduc-Beaumont to the west and Strathcona-Sherwood Park to the east, as had been proposed in the Commission’s interim report.

Our primary goal throughout this process was clear: Beaumont must remain whole. By keeping our community entirely within the proposed new Edmonton-Beaumont district, the Commission respected our city’s integrity and made sure that our local interests will not be diluted across multiple representatives.

I want to thank the dozens of residents who joined Council in telling the Commission that splitting our community was unacceptable. The final report reflects that your voices were heard.

While we advocated strongly for a continued partnership with our neighbours in Leduc, the Commission’s data shows that a combined Leduc-Beaumont district would have been the largest constituency in Alberta and too large to provide fair representation.

This alignment recognizes the reality of our daily lives. Our residents use the 50 Street corridor every day for work and services. We are no longer just a neighbour to the Edmonton Metropolitan region; we are a central part of its growth and success.

In this new district, Beaumont’s population makes up approximately half of the total. It means our community will remain a primary focus of the MLA for the constituency.

Whether we are looking south to our historical partners or north to our growing metropolitan links, Beaumont’s identity remains distinct, and our future is bright. We look forward to working within these new boundaries to ensure our city continues to receive the provincial support and attention it deserves.”
