Beaumont City Council is calling on the commission reviewing Alberta electoral boundaries to reconsider proposed changes that would split the community between two constituencies and diminish its provincial representation.

The Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission is proposing new constituency borders that would divide Beaumont, with residents west of 50 Street remaining in the Leduc-Beaumont constituency and those to the east of 50 Street being placed in a proposed Strathcona-Sherwood Park constituency.

“We recognize the members of the Commission have a difficult challenge balancing many factors to maintain fair representation, but we’re concerned the new borders weaken our voice in the Alberta Legislature,” said Mayor Lisa Vanderkwaak. “Beaumont is a rapidly growing, cohesive urban community with a distinct social identity, and I’m hopeful the Commission will take another look and reconsider the proposed changes.”

Council voted Dec. 9 to submit a letter to the Commission describing why Beaumont should remain intact in a constituency with the neighbouring communities of Leduc County and the City of Leduc. Reasons include:

  • Beaumont residents share schools, recreation facilities, cultural services, emergency response arrangements and transportation networks.
  • Beaumont, Leduc and Leduc County form an integrated and functional regional community with strong social, economic, institutional, transportation and service connections.
  • Beaumont’s population is less than half of the average for proposed ridings and dividing the community would dilute its representation.

The Commission is accepting written submissions until Dec. 19 and will hold public hearings in January 2026. Residents concerned about the effect of the suggested changes are encouraged to make a submission through the Commission’s website or attend a public hearing.

Following the public comment period, the Commission will submit a final report to the Alberta Legislative Assembly.
