E-scooter Pilot Project

E-scooters are coming to Beaumont this summer and are a great way to enjoy the outdoors, be active and move around the city.

Shared e-scooters are rolling into Beaumont this summer

The City of Beaumont welcomes Neuron Mobility as part of a two-year pilot project to offer residents and visitors a fun, active and convenient way to explore the city. The pilot project focuses on safe, respectful riding in Beaumont.

New to e-scooters or Beaumont? We encourage Beaumont riders to get acquainted with Neuron Mobility’s ScootSafe Academy, so you know where you can ride and be safe in our community.

Respectful riding

Take it slow: Reduce your speed in crowded areas or when passing others on sidewalks and trails.

Stay alert: Watch for pedestrians, driveways, parking lot exits, and follow traffic rules:

  • Stop at stop signs and red lights.
  • Yield at crosswalks.
  • Stick to speed limits and slow down in shared areas.
  • Follow e-scooter rules.

Keep right, pass left: Stay on the right side and pass others on the left.

Make space: Slow down and move aside on narrow or busy paths.

Be heard: Use your voice, bell or horn when passing.

Be seen: Check your headlight and taillight work. If not, report it to Neuron Mobility by scanning the QR code on the e-scooter, using the app or calling.

Park responsibly: Step off the trail if stopping. When finished, park on the grass or in a spot that doesn’t block sidewalks or trails.

Reporting an issue or parking violation

Each Neuron e-scooter includes a “scan to report” feature. Use your phone’s camera to scan the QR code located on top of the scooter to report a problem directly to Neuron Mobility.

  • upright with all wheels touching the ground.

Do not park e-scooters:

  • blocking doors, emergency exits, ramps, handrails, bus benches or bus shelters.

There are two slow zones in Beaumont. One is along 50 Street between 52 Ave and 50 Ave where riders can travel 10 km/hr and the second is within Four Seasons Park, where riders can travel 15 km/hr.

Geofencing technology is used in the slow zones to automatically limit speeds.

There may be up to 100 e-scooters available to rent.

For the safety of riders and others, you cannot ride e-scooters through special event areas (e.g., Beaumont Days, Beaumont Music Festival grounds, Farmers’ Market, etc.) or at the skate park and water play park.

The e-scooter app will notify you by text or in-app alert if you are going into a specific “no-go” zone.

The City has designated “no-go” zones where geofencing technology will automatically stop e-scooters if they enter restricted areas.

  • They can expand Beaumont’s transportation network and provide a convenient and affordable transportation choice for the community.
  • They encourage residents to get outside and promote an active lifestyle.
  • They support a vibrant, sustainable community with less traffic congestion and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

The vendor is responsible for providing the e-scooters and overseeing, funding and operating the program. The City estimates the two-year pilot program will cost $14,000 for community engagement activities and infrastructure expenses.

The vendor monitors the weather forecast and if there is a significant rainfall, other potentially hazardous weather conditions or snow, it may choose to suspend e-scooter use. During these times, all e-scooters will be disabled and cannot be rented. In addition, the City can request that e-scooter use be suspended due to weather at any time.

Electronic Scooters (“e-scooters”) are electric motor vehicles that have steering handlebars and a footboard mount on wheels. Shared e-scooters are owned by e-scooter vending companies who control access to their e-scooters through a software application and GPS control/monitoring of the e-scooters.

Residents and visitors can rent e-scooters by finding a parked e-scooter, downloading the related e-scooter company app on their smartphone, and following the instructions through the app to submit payment and activate the e-scooter. Once activated, the e-scooter may be used within the boundaries defined by the e-scooter company and must be parked legally once the trip has ended (the e-scooter does not have to be returned to the same spot where it was originally parked).

The operation of e-scooters on public property (which includes places like shopping areas, parking lots, even though they’re privately owned), is only permitted if the operator has obtained a permit through Alberta Transportation, as per the Traffic Safety Act. The companies that operate shared e-scooter programs in Beaumont have obtained such permits, which is why they are allowed to operate e-scooters on public property, while individuals with private e-scooters cannot.

The approved vendors are currently Neuron Mobility and have a licence that allows them to operate until the end of 2026.
