Update (October 29, 2025, 5:15 pm): Crews encountered unexpected underground conditions during today’s work on 50 Street, resulting in delays to the repair and a temporary water outage. The road between 50 Avenue and 51 Avenue will remain closed overnight until 6 am on October 30 while crews complete the remaining work and restore full service to the area.

As part of this project, nearby businesses and residents experienced a longer-than-expected water outage earlier today. Water service has now been fully restored, and crews are continuing to monitor the system to ensure everything is operating normally.

We recognize this disruption has been challenging, particularly for nearby businesses, and appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as crews work safely to finish the job and reopen the road by morning.

A section of 50 Street between 50 Avenue and 51 Avenue will be closed to vehicles on October 29 for the safe decommissioning of an old waterline beneath the roadway. As part of this work, some nearby businesses and residents may experience a brief water outage between 9 and 11 am, lasting about 30 to 45 minutes while crews complete the disconnection. Water service will be restored as quickly as possible once the work is complete.

This work is needed to remove an old waterline that conflicts with ongoing redevelopment in Centre-Ville. Completing this proactively will help prevent future service disruptions and support continued downtown improvements.

What to expect:

  • A signed detour will guide motorists safely around the affected area (see detour map).
  • Sidewalks on both sides of 50 Street will remain open, but the crosswalk on this block will be temporarily closed.
  • Access to nearby businesses and properties will be maintained where possible.
  • Water may appear slightly discoloured for a short time after service is restored. If this occurs, run cold water until it clears.

Please follow posted signs, allow extra travel time and use caution near the construction area. Timelines may be adjusted if weather or unexpected site conditions arise.
