Health & SafetyHomeownersUtilities Posted on: March 23, 2026 Spring runoff is underway, and with it comes changes to river water quality. Each spring, EPCOR adjusts water treatment processes by adding carbon, which helps to remove odour-causing compounds. Residents may notice a temporary change in the taste or smell of tap water, but it’s still safe to drink. This is a temporary seasonal event that occurs each spring, as snow melt, organics and vegetation react with the water treatment process to produce a chlorine-like smell. This change is short-term and tap water is safe to drink. Easy tips to neutralize odour and taste During spring runoff, if you are experiencing slight changes to the smell and taste of water, there are a few things you can do: Run the cold water tap for three minutes (or until the water feels cold) in the morning and any other time when the water hasn’t been used in six or more hours. Add lemon slices to your water to neutralize any odour or taste changes. If you’re using a filtering device for your tap water, remember to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for replacing and maintaining the filter cartridges.
