[ARCHIVED] There’s no place like home for the holidays

Beaumont, AB – With the holiday season approaching, residents are asked to follow the Alberta government’s measures and avoid social gatherings to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in Beaumont.

As of Dec. 16, 95 active cases and 11 COVID-related deaths had been confirmed in Beaumont. The city also had the fifth highest number of cases per 100,000 in the Edmonton Metro region.

According to information from the Alberta government, household gatherings are the single largest source of infections in Beaumont and the region, responsible for approximately one-third of all cases, particularly among people between the ages of 20 and 40.

“With vaccines for the public starting in a matter of months, there is hope for life after COVID-19. But we have to keep our guard up until then,” said Mayor John Stewart. “I know this is tall order, but please keep to members of your household this holiday season. Christmas and New Year’s Eve are traditionally the time to gather with family and friends, but this year the best way to show your love is with your distance. Nobody wants to be responsible for the loss of a loved one.”

Current health measures from the Alberta government include:

  • A ban on all indoor and outdoor social gatherings, whether private or public.
  • Capacity restrictions for most businesses and place of worship.
  • Mandatory face coverings in all indoor public spaces and workplaces.
  • The temporary closure of indoor recreation facilties, and personal services such as hair salons, spray tanning and tattoos.

Complete details of all provincial restrictions are available on the Alberta government’s website.

Residents are encouraged to remain active with outdoor recreation, including skating, toboganning, cross-country skiing and other activities, but should keep to members of their own household and avoid gathering outside.
