Town of Beaumont’s Recycling Roundup a Success

July 30, 2012

Beaumont, AB – On Saturday, June 2, the Town of Beaumont held its first Recycling Roundup in the parking lot of the S&D Aqua-Fit Centre. The event, made possible through a partnership with Alberta Recycling, was a way for residents to recycle e-waste, paint and household hazardous waste.

At the four hour event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Beaumont residents recycled/disposed of:

• 4500 kg of used electronics
• 5100 kg of used paint
• 450 kg of hazardous solids
• 2200 L of hazardous liquids
• Over 90 fluorescent and CFL light bulbs

“This is another initiative that shows the importance of the environment for the Town and residents. We are very pleased that our residents continue to demonstrate their involvement in green initiatives,” says Mayor Camille Bérubé.

The aim of the Recycling Roundup program is to take paint and electronics out of the residential waste stream and have those items broken down and recycled rather than having them go to the landfill. This preserves space in landfills and allows the materials in those items to be recycled. Also, by disposing of your household hazardous waste in this manner, it avoids contaminating our waterways and landfills and ensures that these items are disposed in an environmentally friendly fashion.

“Over ten metric tonnes of waste was diverted from local landfills and over 2,000 liters of liquids that are not going down our drains!” says Jarret Esslinger, Environmental Sustainability Coordinator.

The Town of Beaumont has a number of environmental initiatives currently occurring this year. One of those is the development of an Environmental Master Plan (EMP) that will guide future environmental initiatives and policies. Residents can sign up for an e-mailing list to receive more information about the EMP. There will be opportunities for residents to provide feedback and that information will be provided during the year. These initiatives and others support the Smart Growth key focus area in the Strategic Plan 2012-2017. For information on these and other environmental initiatives please visit www.beaumont.ab.ca.
