Uncover Your Assets!

We are thrilled to introduce the philosophy of Asset Building to Beaumont.

The Search Institute has identified 40 developmental assets which are the building blocks that help young people grow up healthy, caring and responsible. The 40 assets are divided into two categories, External and Internal Assets.

The External and Internal Assets are broken into the following four sections:

External Assets

Internal Assets

Support Commitment to Learning
Empowerment Positive Values
Boundaries and Expectations Social Competence
Constructive Use of Time Positive Identity

For more information, take a look at our list:

40 Developmental Assets

Beaumont FCSS is using the philosophy of developmental assets in every thing we do with youth in our community and we hope you will too. Everyone, whether you are a parent, a grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend, neighbor, doctor, teacher or employer can help build assets in our children and our youth.

Some of the results from the 2009 survey:

  • 25% perceive that adults in our community value youth
  • 50% have positive family boundaries where there are clear rules and consequences, and their whereabouts are monitored
  • 60% of youth in Beaumont feel their parents and teachers encourage them to do well

Asset Building is about doing what we all already do, but being intentional and positively interacting with young people more often.  How can you build assets?

  • Start a conversation over your fence with a young neighbor
  • Send a young person a thank you card
  • Encourage youth to write letter to the editor when they are passionate about an issue
  • Have a block party or organzie a neighbourhood Halloween party

Stay tuned for more ways you can get involved and become an asset builder and remember there are no BUTS in the 40 Assets!
